Question
Can a heater replace a dehumidifier?
Answer
No. A heater cannot replace a dehumidifier.
A heater merely raises the room temperature. Whilst this does reduce the relative humidity, the absolute amount of moisture remains unchanged. The moisture remains in the room and can condense again when temperatures drop or on cold surfaces.
A dehumidifier works on a different principle: it actively removes water from the air in the room and collects it in a tank or drains it away via a drain. This permanently reduces the actual amount of water in the air.
Why is this important?
In the event of damp problems – for example, following water damage, in basements or poorly ventilated rooms – the excess moisture must be removed from the room. Heating alone does not remove this moisture; it remains in the room. Without adequate dehumidification, moisture can condense on cold surfaces and increase the risk of mould growth or structural damage.
Conclusion
A heating system merely alters the ratio between air temperature and relative humidity. However, it does not remove water from the air in the room. A dehumidifier reduces absolute humidity by actively extracting water from the air. Therefore, a dehumidifier is the appropriate solution in cases of persistently high humidity or damp-related damage.
